Today’s the day! Are you ready?

Today's the day. Are You Ready? It's officially the New Year so all those resolutions you've been thinking about start now! If you haven't already sat down and written out your goals for 2012, that would be a great place to start. Setting goals (and writing them down) is one of the best things you can do to ensure that this isn't just another year of false promises to yourself. Ever since I can remember I have believed in the power of setting goals.  Writing them down on paper, looking at them daily and visualizing what my life would be like after I achieve that particular goal. The first time I can remember setting a significant goal was when I was 17 years old.  My younger … Continue reading

Life is a 100 course meal. Eat it up

sidelines My friend Heidi posted a question on her FB page that got me thinking  “If someone were to pay you one million dollars to get to your ideal weight, could you do it?” I think the answer is yes for all but a few of us, but that's not surprising.  Just look at what people are willing to do on “Biggest Loser” and they don’t get a million dollars.  Most of them have a lot more weight to lose than the majority of us. So if we’d be willing to get to our ideal weight for a million dollars then why don’t we just do for the things that really matter?  Our health, our family, our ability to participate in … Continue reading

Cruise Into Your IdealShape

I love my Job! This past weekend I went to San Antonio Texas to spend time with our friends Trent and Courtney Kimball.  They own Texas Armoring Company (TAC).  Trent is the CEO and he gave a whole group of us a tour of the manufacturing plant (they armor cars for wealthy business people all over the world). It was so much fun as he showed us around and told stories of some of his clients he has helped.  He then did a demonstration of how their product protects lives.  He had an employee shoot several rounds of an AK47 into a windshield (if you want to watch a video of it you can go here As I was thinking … Continue reading

Shocking Study: Stress causes Overeating

I read this article last week titled Stress gives rats and humans munchies. It was a really good article and gave some good information. But it wasn't a shock to us that they found out if you stressed out mice(or humans) they would over eat.  Our clients have been telling us for years they eat more comfort foods when they get stressed out.  They even admit that they know it’s a temporary solution to the stress.  In many cases overeating eating only adds more stress to their lives. In the study restricting food was used as the stimulus to create higher levels of stress for the mice. The mice responded by overeating once food was made readily available. Interesting this … Continue reading

5 Tips To Getting Rid of Bad Habits

Do you have a goal of something that you really want to change but don’t seem to have the will power? One that I have had to deal with is a quick check of my emails & Facebook in the morning before I go workout. What starts out as a few minutes can end up taking several hours and my workout time is gone.  I’ve even found myself at my computer still in my workout clothes at noon realizing not only did I skip my workout but I haven’t even showered. I don’t think it’s a willpower issue.  I believe it’s just a bad habit and needs to be replaced with a better habit.  Somewhere you’re getting some benefit from … Continue reading

10 Ways to De-Stress To Shed Pounds

Stress eating is one of the most popular sources of weight gain in today's society. We’ve talked in previous posts about what happens when we get stressed.  We release Cortisol to “fight or flight”.  Since we don’t usually have to  fight someone or take off on a fast run. All that Cortisol in our system isn’t good. The funny thing is in the short-term stress can boost cardiovascular performance.  If it’s not too severe it the brain will actually perform better. You’ll be able to solve problems more effectively  and you’re likely to retain information better.  On the flip side though is if the stress is too severe or too prolonged it can actually harm learning.  If you’re stressed out … Continue reading

Keeping Calories Down, the ‘Log’ical Way

I’m going to share some advice that I recommend to our clients but I don’t really like to do it.  It’s logging everything you eat each day for at least 30 days.  I don’t like to count calories but I had to log my food for 30 days to really understand exactly what I was putting into my body.  So many items are deceptive.  You can eat a salad and think “I just ate a really healthy lunch so I can have a chocolate élcair for dessert”.  What you may not know is that, supposedly, healthy salad you just ate was packed with 1,100 calories.  No kidding.  There’s a Parmesan Crusted Chicken Salad at Macaroni Grill that’s 1100 calories and … Continue reading

Coconut Flour, is it all it’s Cracked up to be?

One of my weaknesses when eating a healthier diet is items made with wheat. I love most breads, cookies, pastries, cakes, pizza, etc. Not only are they tasty but wheat is one of the most popular foods in the American diet. Most people I know eat wheat in one form or another at every meal. I think the main reason is that it can be made into so many different foods; plus we have plenty of it as a nation so it’s fairly cheap to cook with. Just a few preservatives but the shelf life is fairly lengthy. Some people, however, are allergic to wheat or cannot tolerate gluten-the protein in many grains. Others, like myself, try to limit the … Continue reading

The ‘How’s and ‘Why’s of Eating 5 Times a Day

Think about this.  When your children were babies how often did they eat?  Most babies I know eat every couple hours.  In fact, as a new mother it’s sometimes difficult to feed them that often but that’s when they were hungry.  As they started to grow, didn’t it seem like they were always eating?  Not big meals,  more like grazing.  Then doesn’t it seem reasonable that eating 5-6 times a day is natural? We actually had to be trained to go to 3 larger meals a day. There’s this big debate out there as to which is better for you if you’re trying to get healthier and lose weight.  Just eat 3 meals a day or eat smaller meals 5-6 … Continue reading
