Nutrition Challenge 7- Breakfast: Break the Fast the Right Way
If you ask anyone what the most important meal of the day is they will most likely tell you that it’s breakfast. All of us have heard that. In fact, I have heard that more times than I can even count. But is this cliché saying true?
Yes. It is in fact true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Breakfast helps to fuel you for the rest of your day. During the night our body uses the nutrients available to it to rebuild and heal from the previous day, so in the morning our bodies need to be refueled. However, it’s not necessarily important to eat breakfast the very second you wake up. In fact, it has been found that whether you eat breakfast right when you wake up or a couple of hours later, it is still has the same benefits.
There is a common misconception that if you want to lose weight you should skip breakfast, or at least eat a very small one. It makes sense, right? You want to drop a few pounds so you eat less. Skipping breakfast actually has the opposite result. Those who skip breakfast are, on average, more overweight than those who eat a well balanced breakfast every day.
I know that it seems a little counter intuitive to eat a lot when you are trying to lose weight. But those who eat a lot in the morning have reported eating less throughout the day because they aren’t as hungry. The big breakfast they eat helps keep them satisfied throughout the day. However, keep in mind that eating a big breakfast won’t help you at all if you are going out and getting a sausage mcgriddle at McDonalds every morning. Having a quick piece of toast or a granola bar as you run out the door isn’t going to cut it either.
The key is to eat a hearty and healthy breakfast that gives you a pretty equal balance or carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. An example of a well balanced breakfast is an omelet with some veggies in it and a side of fruit.
