I’ve made two big discoveries since I moved out of my parents house for college: time and crock pots. You may think those are complete opposites and they don’t go together at all but actually it’s quite the opposite. Time became an important discovery because I quickly realized I don’t have a lot of it so I have to make the most of the time I do have. One of the ways I do that is crock-pot-cookin’.
Have you ever tried a crock pot recipe? If you haven’t, you need to. There are some great things about crock pots:
1) It’s easy! People think that cooking has to be a whole event. If you use crock pots, it’s so simple. This is what I do. The night before I set out all the ingredients, it takes about 5-10 minutes at the most. Then when I wake up in the morning I throw it all in a crock pot and turn it on, that takes less than 5 minutes. I get home after work and school that day and dinner is done! is there anything faster? Straight from the pot to the plate.
2) You don’t have to be a professional chef. The recipes typically aren’t difficult at all. You don’t really have to even cook, you just throw it in.
3) There’s plenty to share. One thing I do is take turns with my roommate. I eat hers and she eats mine, it all evens out and then you even have dinner nights you don’t cook (that’s my favorite part). One thing I struggled with at first was justifying cooking a whole meal for one person. With crock-pots you can share with the roomies or your family or friends or whoever you live with. Or you can use it as leftovers. We all love leftovers and for some reason crock-pots make the BEST leftovers.
4) It makes the world’s best meat. I am a carnivore. I love meat. To me there is nothing better than a nice slab of meet. And crock pots cook meat nice and slowly and that makes the meat so wonderfully tender.
So what could be better? It’s fast, simple, there’s plenty of it, and it’s good. I don’t know what else you could ask for.
I got my first crock pot about a year ago from my sister. To be honest, the thing intimidated me. I’m far from a professional chef and so the thing sat there for 6 months collecting dust. Then when I finally brought it out and tried it I realized just how simple it really was! I couldn’t believe it. Now I can fool all my friends into thinking I am a famous chef.
