Sixteen months ago, Kelly Smith couldn’t tie her shoes. At 355 pounds, everyday activities that people take for granted weren’t in the realm of possibility for her… things like brushing her hair, going on amusement park rides, hugging her son.
When she had to go on business trips, she was constantly afraid of being denied a seat on the plane. When she did fly, she had to use a seatbelt extension.
Kelly uses her emotional story to help others. She’s become a passionate advocate for a healthy lifestyle and encouraging people in the IdealShape community on their journeys, no matter the obstacle. If anyone understands, she does.
Growing up, Kelly was always the big kid. She had a difficult childhood and “never had a good role model on how to eat to nourish your body.” She spent her whole life on the sidelines, watching others do things and not being able to participate.
“It doesn’t take long to exclude yourself from everything,” she says. “I always knew I was overweight, I just didn’t know what to do about it.” The obstacle ahead always seemed too great, so she put off making a change until “tomorrow.”
But one day, Kelly decided it would be “today.” Her transformation began with the most important meal of the day: breakfast. She started trading large, southern-style breakfasts for an IdealShake for appetite control. This set her up for more healthy choices, and she had another shake for lunch, followed by a sensible dinner and some healthy snacks in between. Pretty soon, she was launching a workout routine.
In less than two years, Kelly has lost 188 pounds and is fully participating in life, from running to hanging out on the beach with her son. In fact, we got to go on park rides together when she came to the Ship Shape Challenge winner retreat in Park City, Utah!
“It’s an exhilarating feeling knowing you’re not trapped in this body anymore,” Kelly says. “To be able to experience life, instead of constantly hiding in the shadows.” Watch her video to find out about her first-ever parasailing trip!
