It happens to the everyone at one point or another – I’ve definitely dealt with my fair share! Whether it’s lack of motivation, an injury, or you begin to plateau with your results. The key here is to not let these roadblocks and challenges throw you off your course completely.

That’s why I’ve made it easy for you to fight back. I’ve put together a list of 10 different ways for you to protect yourself from certain roadblocks and solidify your top fitness goals right now.

Work Out From Home

Did you know that a majority of the people who own a gym membership don’t even go to the gym on a regular basis? In fact, an estimated 67% of people with gym memberships never use them. That’s crazy!

Achieving your fitness goals doesn’t necessarily come by just buying a gym membership, it comes from your personal desire and motivation to workout. You need to push yourself every day, and make it a habit and priority to exercise for your health and well-being, as well as your weight loss goals!

The good news is, you don’t actually need a gym membership to work out. All you need is a plan and consistency. You can implement a home work out program, like my free 15 Day IdealShape for Life Challenge, which you can easily do from the comfort of your own home!

Have Patience

I totally get it. Seeing results is what gives you motivation, and when you don’t see any right away you tend to become frustrated with your fitness goals. The struggle is so real! The truth is it could take several weeks before you actually start to see a difference in your body. Changes are happening whether you can see them or not, so you just have to be patient.

Just remember to be realistic in your goals and your expectations. You might not see results right away within the first week, so avoid becoming frustrated and giving up when you don’t. All good things in life take time, and your fitness goals are no different.

Thankfully, there are non-scale victories that you can focus on, to motivate you until you start seeing visible physical results. When you start to work out regularly, you will notice that you have more energy, your clothes will fit better, and you will feel healthier! Not only that, you will be happier! Remember, endorphins make you feel good and make you happy!

You can also focus on your personal victories like eating a healthy breakfast all week, saying no to the doughnuts in the break room, or working out when you planned.

Patience is a virtue for a reason. Be patient with your results, with your fitness goals, and with yourself. Remember that you didn’t gain the weight overnight, so you won’t lose the weight overnight either!

Warm Up and Cool Down

A little injury never hurt anybody, right? Wrong! Nothing destroys weight loss and fitness goals faster than an injury! I would know! When I was younger I sustained a terrible knee injury that not only crushed my dance dreams, but I also ended up gaining 30 pounds!

While some injuries are completely unavoidable, most are actually preventable. In order to prevent injury and promote efficient recovery after your workout, you need to properly warm up before your workout, and afterwards cool down.

Take some time and be sure that your muscles and joints are moving properly before you start your workout. Do a light cardio warm-up to loosen up those muscles, and then do some stretches.

After your workout, you should also do some stretching to promote healthy recovery. Also feel free to grab a foam roller and roll out your muscles.

Choose Workouts According to Your Fitness Level

The Fast and the Furious was a great high-paced action movie, but it definitely shouldn’t be your motto when it comes to getting into a new fitness routine! Don’t push yourself too hard too fast. Choosing an exercise plan that is outside of your capabilities can cause injuries, and can especially discourage you.

Your exercise program should challenge your body to adapt and change, but ensure that you are not pushing yourself to the point of injury. Know your limits and plan your workouts accordingly.

You can try low intensity routines like yoga or pilates, and work your way into harder exercises with weights and HIIT power movements.

Listen to Your Body

Going along with knowing your limits, listening to your body will also allow you to prevent injuries from occurring.

If you’re sick and your body needs rest, then it is important that you give it rest! It will be more damaging to you and your goals if you push your body when you are sick, rather than recuperate and let it heal.

If you’re sore, rest that muscle group or area as best as you can. Take the time to stretch properly, and drink plenty of fluids. If a certain exercise move is hurting, beyond the normal “feel the burn” of a workout, you can modify it to adjust to what your body can handle.

Once again don’t push yourself to the point of injury or to the point where you are losing progress instead of gaining it. Listen to the signals your body is giving you!

Find a Workout Partner

Each of us live such crazy, busy lives! Sometimes amongst the daily chaos, it’s tough to summon up the motivation or energy to do a workout! Trust me, I totally get it! That’s why Zac and I tend to workout together. We push each other and end up having a better workout than we probably would have if we had worked out alone.

Working out with a partner not only makes your workouts more fun, but you can hold each other accountable! You will push each other, and get to your fitness goals faster.

A partner can also help offer some constructive criticism on your techniques, give you suggestions on how to do something better, and mostly just give you someone to work hard with!

Stay Positive

Working out should be challenging and make you sweat, but it should also be fun! If you’re not enjoying your workouts or are not seeing the results you want, change up your workout routine to make it more enjoyable. Negativity is the enemy of motivation, so if something is not making you happy, change it up!

A little bit of positivity goes a long way; if you go into a workout with a great attitude, it’s more than likely that you will have a positive result!
Also remember, most of the time the results you want are not going to come all at once. So stay positive and be patient, try to focus on the little goals and not the bigger picture!

Schedule Your Workout to Fit Your Day

Plan your workouts in advance! This will help you fit your training into your busy schedule, because we all know how quickly our days tend to fill up! If you have a set time to get your workout in, it makes it much easier to stick to a workout program.

Scheduling work out time subtracts the stress of making it to the gym out of the equation, and instead will allow you to focus on your fitness goals and what you want to accomplish with that particular workout session.

If you know you only have time to work out during your lunch break, plan accordingly so that you can utilize every minute most effectively. Similarly, if you have a two hour window in the morning before work, set your alarm early and get your outfit ready the night before so you can literally just roll out of bed and get going.

Make a Plan

When you have a plan in place, it is harder to fail! Without a plan you may end up losing motivation mid-workout, talking yourself out of exercising, wandering from machine to machine at the gym, or you may never reach your full fitness goal potentials.

By planning out your workouts, you can set realistic challenges for yourself and build-up your stamina to fully maximize your progress.

With the proper planning techniques you can determine a great personalized workout program for yourself, and actually hit your goals!

Work Out According to Your Goals

Before you even make a plan, you need to determine what your goals actually are. Having a clear perspective of what your goals are will help you design your plan according what you are trying to accomplish.

Sometimes it is easier to stick with something when it is in writing. So, write your goals down and refer back to them regularly in order to stay on track. Stick it on your bathroom mirror, on your fridge, or wherever you will constantly see it and be reminded of your end objective!

Here are some examples:

  • Lose 10 pounds in a month
  • Fit into that dress you bought for your son’s wedding this summer
  • Be able to walk up a flight of stairs without losing my breath
  • Feel confident in a bathing suit

Whatever your goal is, write it down and let it inspire you. Let it light that fire inside you to motivate you and push you forward!
