At IdealShape, our mission is about helping people create and maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you want to achieve a healthy lifestyle, it all starts in the brain. The brain controls what we do, what we eat, how we feel about ourselves, and so much more.
Have you ever noticed that it’s easier to accomplish something when you feel good? If your brain feels good, it’s more likely to take action. So now we just need to figure out ways to help our brain feel good—in a healthy way!
Whenever I was sad, bored, or depressed as a youth, my mom would tell me to go out and give service to someone. Seriously?! The last thing I wanted to do was go help someone when I was caught up in being so self-absorbed.
Well, I’ll bet you can already see the ending here, but I quickly noticed how good I felt while serving others. Giving service felt so good that it turned into my life’s new ethos. I’ve become addicted to helping others in any way I can. When my brain feels good, I feel inspired and have energy to do other things like exercise and make healthier meals.
In fact, according to a 2007 study done by the Corporation for National and Community Service, “Those who engage in volunteer activities are less likely to suffer from ill health later in life and may be introduced into a positive reinforcing cycle of good health and future volunteering.” Volunteers become addicted to a ‘helpers high’ like what I experience and live healthier lives.
So, in order to get everyone involved in service, we have embarked on our 25 Days of Giving campaign. Keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram accounts to see what’s going on. Each day, we’ll post something we did and invite you all to upload something you’ve done, too. We’ll get together here at the office the next day and choose a winner from the submissions, who will receive something from us, too!
Have fun, be creative, and remember the spirit of giving. You never know whose life you’ll change…even your own!
