Your daily workout doesn’t have to require sweaty gym clothes and kettle bells! Dancing with fire lets Christina Kilbane turn exercise into an art form.
It all started when Christina went out on a limb and signed up for a Samba class, which is a Brazilian style of dance. Adjusting to a new life in a new city, she figured: why not?
The Samba class turned out to be an exhilarating hour and a half of non-stop cardio with live drummers and, unbeknownst to her, the possibility of learning to dance with fire! Don’t be intimidated, though: the class is made up of all experience levels.
“I just felt this resonance with the people and the music and the dance,” she says. “Once I came to the class, I didn’t feel like anyone was judging me.”
Knowing nothing about it on that first day — she described herself as a “flailing monkey” — Christina loved feeling that it was a judge-free zone. Four years later, she’s still passionate about it and has competed for the title of “Samba Queen” in local performances with a group called Samba Fogo.
A biology student working multiple jobs, Christina finds that Samba gives her a chance to get out of the lab and move her body, as well as enjoy wonderful friends, expand her awareness of Brazilian culture and (no big deal) play with fire.
“It’s really amazing to dance with fire. You just are able to hear it and you just feel so much more present.”
