Weight loss journeys often begin because we don’t like something about ourselves. Working out becomes a punishment because we feel unhappy about where we’re at, and eating anything other than salad makes you feel guilty. Self-criticism starts to seep into our lives, and we feel like we don’t deserve happiness.
I’m gonna be blunt here: that is 100% the WRONG way to go about making a change.
If you’re punishing your body, your body is so not going to respond well.
As a personal trainer for over ten years, I’ve seen so many women come to me in tears, just wanting to make a change. They look in the mirror and hate what they see. I know exactly what that feels like–I struggled with body image when I was younger, so much so that some days I hated what I saw in the mirror.
First things first, you need to know how amazing you are. If you don’t think you are amazing, you are not ready to start your transformation. A positive outlook on life (and yourself) is crucial before making a big change. We’ve gotta be good with where we are at, but ready to be in a better place. I pulled together my best non-weight loss tips to feeling absolutely amazing that will prep you for the life changes that are ahead!
People, women especially, tear themselves down a lot. Our brains become wired to think bad thoughts about ourselves. Instead of letting your brain go wild and tell you lies, start saying positive things to yourself. Look in the mirror and tell yourself what a beautiful woman you are!
Here’s an example: If you wake up in the morning and don’t feel like getting up, try saying to yourself, “I am so excited to start this day because of all the good I will do!” It might feel cheesy, but you’ll start to feel better. Relish in the positive by turning negative statements around.
If you catch yourself saying something bad about yourself, stop and think of 3 awesome things about you. Write them down, even, so you can remember them later! Try it out, I dare you.
Notice the Good
Our days are full of good things and bad things. That’s just life! We can choose to focus on the positive or the negative. When we start focusing on our failures and downfalls, we let our brains focus on the bad. Complaining and venting motivates our brain to keep up those bad habits. Instead of focusing on the bad things, start noticing the good things!
Great things happen for us every day, and if we would just pick them out and shine some light on them, we would feel so much better. If you start feeling down, take a look at what you’ve been focusing on that day. Has it been positive, or negative? Chances are, you’ve had some negative thoughts that just need a quick flip to the positive.
Be You (no matter what anyone else says)
Why do we spend so much time comparing ourselves to other people, and trying to blend into the crowd?? I don’t want to blend in–I want to stand out because I am so stinkin’ happy with who I am and who I am becoming. Don’t worry about what anyone else is doing–you do you.
I especially try to remember this idea of “be you” when I’m at the gym. Everyone works out at a different level, but it can be hard to watch other people working out harder and faster than you. That doesn’t matter, though! If you are working out, you have already won the day. It doesn’t matter if someone else is lifting more or going faster, you take your workout at your pace and be proud of yourself the whole way through. Just do you!
Take A Minute
Life is busy. Life is messy. Life rarely gives you time to stop, kick your feet up and just take a minute for yourself. If life isn’t going to give that moment of peace to us, dang it we’re gonna have to create it for ourselves.
Going going going all day long is not sustainable! You’ll burn yourself out if you get too busy. Take a second and think about what would make YOU feel great. And then do that thing! Self love is all about making sure you are taken care of…get cozy on the couch, put on a funny sitcom and grab your Chocolate Coconut IdealShake and take a load off!
Love yo’ self
If you’re choosing to workout and eat right because you love your body, you will see better results. While you lose weight the right way, you’ll #GainMore happiness and confidence in yourself.
