Have you ever heard the saying “if you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail”? Well, it’s true. One of the most important things to do when you begin a weight loss journey is to map out not just the results you want, but how you’re going to get there.
Have you ever been really excited to visit somewhere you’ve never been but you decided not to bring directions? If you don’t have a map or GPS it’s going to be pretty tough to get where you want to go.
Chances are you’ll make a wrong turn, hit a detour, or find yourself at a dead end with no idea how you got there.
Weight loss is exactly the same. If you know where you want to go you have to plan a way to get there. “Winging it” won’t get you far and you’ll only feel frustrated in the end.
For our nutritionist, Lindsey, setting a plan was essential for her weight loss success! She thought she was doing everything right. Lindsey was so confused why she wasn’t seeing the results she wanted when she had “tried everything.” Finally a light bulb went on and Lindsey realized what she was doing wrong. All day long she would eat without even realizing it: she would pick at her kids’ cereal in the morning, finish sandwich crusts, wander into the pantry and graze (just a little!). Lindsey needed a plan that was black and white. It wasn’t until she created a clear-cut plan for herself that she started seeing the results that she so badly wanted.
Having a plan will make a huge difference in your attempt to lose weight. There are three things that you need to do to plan for success:
1. Make a Plan
You need to plan out your food and fitness. Making a goal to eat healthy or be more active isn’t enough. Create a menu for the week of what you’re going to eat everyday. Not only do you have a plan for what you’re going to eat that week but what you’re going to buy at the grocery store. Same goes for fitness. If you want to go to the gym plan your workout ahead of time and set a time frame.
2. Be Prepared
Make achieving the goals you’ve made easy. Prepare your healthy snacks and lunch ahead of time, that way when you’re hungry you don’t have to think about what you’re going to eat or put time and effort into making a healthy snack you can just grab and go. When you’re ready to work out make sure you have your exercise clothes gathered, ipod charged, etc.
3. Follow Through
This one’s simple. Stick with the plan! Once you’ve done step one and two you just have to make step three non-negotiable.
Planning ahead will make your life so much simpler! Recently David Meine, the CEO and co-founder of IdealShape, and Lindsey wrote a book called the IdealPlan. It’s a nutrition plan complete with meal plans and recipes. I am seriously excited about our IdealPlan because it’s simple and effective and anyone can do it. It’s a way for us here at IdealShape to help even more individuals reach their ideal shape.
If you want to succeed at anything planning is essential. When it comes to weight loss it’s especially important because we have to relearn new habits and overcome old ones. With a little bit of foresight and preparation you can reach your dream body.
