How to Use Visualization to Crush Cravings

With the busy lifestyle that we all lead, it’s too easy to be tempted to grab a burger and fries from a fast food restaurant or a candy bar from the vending machine instead of eating a proper, healthy meal. Especially if your willpower is depleted. The problem with doing that is when you give in to temptation, you’re not building healthy habits that lead to your ideal body shape. You’re stepping backward instead of forward.

Temptation is everywhere. It’s in the vending machine down the hall and in the doughnut box in the break room. It’s sitting on every fast food corner and on the shelves of every grocery store. It’s probably even waiting for you in the dark recesses of your own pantry.

No wonder we sometimes feel powerless against our cravings! But we aren’t powerless. Visualization is a proven technique to that can help you achieve any goal. Whether it’s an athlete picturing their big win or an artist imagining his next masterpiece, it works. And you can make it work for weight loss, or any other health or body goal you have. I’ll show you how in this post!

What is visualization?

Think visualization sounds obscure? The truth is, we all use it all the time. For example, when you buy a lottery ticket, you visualize yourself winning and imagine what you would do with all that money. When you plan a get-together, you visualize all of your guests showing up and having a great time. That is visualization!

How can visualization help you conquer temptation?

Visualization can help you change unhealthy eating habits into healthy ones; ones that will help you reach your goals. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to walk right past that vending machine because it will no longer call out to you. Instead, you’ll picture yourself in your ideal body shape and that will be stronger than any short-term gratification you’ll find inside of a candy wrapper or fast food restaurant.

What should you visualize?

Picture yourself in your ideal body. Imagine how great you’ll look and how incredible you’ll feel once you reach your goal. Simply close your eyes and imagine that you have already achieved your dream of a slim, healthy you.

You can picture yourself shopping for clothes in your ideal pant size and shirt size, and picture what you will look like in them. Imagine how wonderful you’ll feel when you like how you look. Envision having the energy to run and play with your kids or do activities you haven’t been able to do in some time. Be specific, and once you find a visual image that sparks a strong positive feeling for you, stick with it. Writing down the details and being consistent will help solidify your ideal life in your mind’s eye.

When to use this technique

Now that you have your visualization firmly in your head, open your eyes and realize that the doughnut or the cheeseburger or the candy bar is not the way to reach your ideal body image. Does the “ideal you” cave into sugary seduction or does the ideal you crave healthy foods that bring you energy and joy?

See the temptation for what it is: a stumbling block in your path to success. Train your brain to pull up these visualizations every time you face a new temptation and you’ll find that the desire to indulge will slip away. Once you do this and continue with daily success those bad habits will be replaced with the desire to achieve your goals.

I’ve found that people who use visualization are more likely to maintain their weight loss results. If you can’t see it and you can’t believe it, then your brain’s going to resist you and go “wait a minute.” You have to retrain your brain to be the new size you want to be.
