Detox waters and other weight loss drink recipes have been all the rage recently.
Many of them come with big claims about how much weight they can help you lose. But in the end the only thing you’re getting is better hydration… maybe.
What you need is a weight loss drink that will actually help you shed pounds.
Must Have Weight Loss Drink Recipe Elements
There are certain must have elements for the perfect weight loss drink recipe. A weight loss drink that actually works needs to…
- Help you control your cravings and block hunger.
- Boost your energy.
- Provide antioxidants.
- Increase your metabolism and fat burn.
- Be low in calories but big on flavor.
When it comes to weight loss one of the biggest pitfalls that throws people off track is hunger! How many times have you tried to diet yourself silly? You wind up starving and ready to eat just about anything. That’s when you find yourself elbow deep in a bag of potato chips or plowing halfway through a box of cookies. Then, afterwards, you feel guilty!
Trust me, we’ve ALL been there. Hunger isn’t your friend when it comes to weight loss. In fact, it’s enemy number one. Getting a little peckish before your next meal isn’t a bad thing, but feeling drop dead hungry only leads to overeating, snacking mindlessly, and destroying your weight loss goals.
That’s why it’s important for your weight loss drink to have a hunger-blocker in it -something that will help you feel full and satisfied between meals, so that you’re able to cut calories and weight. Some drinks just use fiber but that isn’t enough by itself. Plus too much fiber might have you constantly running to the bathroom.
I like the hunger-blocker Slendesta®. It’s made from all-natural potato protein extract and it’s proven to help you feel full for up to three hours! You can say goodbye to goal-ruining binge fests and say hello to complete appetite control.
2. Energy Booster
In order to lose weight, you need to create what’s called a calorie deficit. Basically, it means you need to eat fewer calories than your body burns. This forces your body to start using your fat for energy, yay! But the downside to eating fewer calories can often be that you feel less energized. You are consuming less energy after all.
Losing weight also means exercise, or at least getting more active to help your body burn more calories. But getting a good workout can be difficult when you don’t have any energy! On top of that low-energy means that you’re more likely to reach for a candy bar or some other sugary treat in order to get that rush of energy.
That’s why it’s so important to include energizing ingredients in your weight loss drink recipe. Caffeine and B-vitamins are two of my go-to’s.
Caffeine is obviously a classic energy booster. Nothing new there. But I like caffeine because it does double-duty as a fat burner as well. There are tons of studies that show how caffeine can help you burn more fat.
I also like vitamin B for energy. It works to help you feel more energized by converting the food you eat into readily available energy for your body and muscles. Since your body can’t store vitamin B you need to get enough regularly to feel the good effects.
Antioxidants are important to keep your body running at peak capacity because they protect you from free radicals. What are free radicals? They’re molecules that cause damage to your cells. They can even alter your cells at a DNA level. They cause cancer and a whole lot of other health issues. Not good.
Losing weight isn’t just about looking good. It’s about feeling healthier too. So while most antioxidants don’t cause or directly affect weight loss, boosting your overall health with antioxidants is a must. Plus, healthy cells are able to use energy (a.k.a. calories) more efficiently which makes losing weight a lot easier.
Green tea is full of powerful health-boosting antioxidants called catechins. Scientists actually think the reason that Asians are healthier than Westerners is because of all the green tea they drink. It’s even thought to help prevent cancer and boost weight loss (more on that in a bit).
4. Metabolism Booster
Of all the elements that you should have in your weight loss drink, metabolism boosters are at the top of the list. No weight loss drink recipe is complete without a little something that can help you increase fat burn. And while certain diet drink concoctions promise weight loss with a combination of apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper, not only do these drinks taste disgusting, there’s no research to back up the claims.
Instead, let’s focus on ingredients that have the research to back them up. Just remember even effective, fat-burning ingredients aren’t going to do all the work for you. Ingredients that increase calorie burn can help you boost results but you still need to stay on track.
Some of the most cutting-edge ingredients include green tea, raspberry ketones, and green coffee bean. Green tea has been heavily studied for a wide variety of benefits, including weight loss. There are multiple studies that show an increase in fat burn with the use of green tea. Researchers are very interested in how green tea can be used to combat obesity.
Another ingredient you might have heard of is raspberry ketone. Raspberry ketone exploded with popularity when Dr. Oz featured it on his show. He touted the amazing, fat-burning benefits and got a lot of people excited about it. While it might not be the miracle ingredient that Dr. Oz claims, there’s up-and-coming research that shows it has a lot of promise.
Like green tea, green coffee bean is a well-researched ingredient with some impressive results. Not only does it have caffeine (another known metabolism booster) it has chlorogenic acid. That’s the ingredient that scientists think helps with weight loss. Roasted coffee beans don’t have nearly as much chlorogenic acid, so it’s not as effective for fat loss as green, unroasted coffee beans.
5. Low-Calorie, Big Flavor
I mentioned earlier that hunger is a big reason why so many people fail when trying to lose weight. Feeling full and satisfied is one thing, but we all know that hunger isn’t always about feeling physically hungry. Cravings can hit after you’ve already eaten a meal or when you know you’re not hungry at all.
Usually, these cravings are connected to emotional eating. You could be bored, sad, stressed, nervous, or a million other emotions that make you want to reach for something sweet and comforting.
But by creating a low-calorie weight loss drink that tastes amazing and also has a hunger-blocker, you can satisfy your cravings as well as your physical hunger without packing on extra calories.
Giving in to your cravings isn’t the best thing to do, but ignoring them completely is worse. Just like when you let yourself get overly hungry, trying to ignore your cravings can end in a total blowout. That’s why it’s a good idea to replace the thing that you’re craving with a low-calorie alternative.
This is a great technique when you’re trying to cut sugary drinks, like soda, out of your diet. If you just love the sweet refreshing taste of pop, then you definitely want to make sure you like the taste of your weight loss drink. It makes swapping out soda a lot easier when you love the taste of the replacement drink.
