What Pokémon GO Can Do For Your Health

Girl On Phone Playing Pokemon Go

What do Calum Von Moger aka Mr. Universe, John Mayer, and Demi Lovato have in common? They are all a part of the Pokémon GO rage right now.

With millions of people (celebrities and athletes included) throwing virtual Pokeballs (pronounced po-key-balls) at Pikachu all around the world, it’s hard not to be a little curious what the big fuss is all about.

You may be thinking it’s just another app that people are overly obsessed with, but what if I told you that there are actually many health benefits to playing this game.

Let me name a few: reduces the chance of heart disease, burns calories, and it serves as an aid to depression and anxiety.

If you don’t know what Pokémon GO is, don’t fret. I will go over what Pokémon Go is, the physical and mental health benefits of playing, and maybe some extra workouts as well. Get ready to experience Pokémon like you never have before!

Pokémon GO For Dummies

I’m sure you’ve seen the large groups of people hovering around town while being glued to their phones? They may be gathered in parks, historic places, or just at a random bar. So what are these zombie-like people doing?

They’re just trying to catch’em all.

Pokémon Go is an app on your phone which turns the world we live in, into an augmented Pokémon reality. In the game, you’re the Pokémon trainer and with your phone’s camera you are able to catch Pokémon. You could be surrounded by Pokémon right now and not even know it!

After catching so many Pokémon you’re likely to run out of Pokeballs (what you throw at Pokémon to catch them). Pokémon GO has marked certain locations near you as “Pokestops” which solves this problem. Once there, you are able to get free Pokeballs and other supplies.

Once you start building your Pokémon collection you can pick either red, blue or yellow team to be a part of. What team you are is important when you’re going to try and take over “gyms”.

These aren’t gyms where you will find strong bodybuilders, but gyms where you will find strong Pokémon. Gyms are located at random spots throughout the world and are places where you can battle your Pokémon to see who really is the very best.

There are many other aspects of Pokémon Go that allow you to level up your Pokémon, evolve them, and most importantly just getting yourself outside walking!

Physical Health Benefits of Pokémon GO

Some people today are saying that Pokémon Go has done more to combat obesity than Michelle Obama has done in eight years!

Whether or not you believe it, you can’t deny the fact that this app is getting people moving.

Pokémon Go helps people get off their butts and get walking to find new Pokémon, get more Pokeballs at a Pokestop, or battle a gym. There are so many health benefits to all this walking and playing which include…

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Burn calories
  • Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Increase balance and coordination
  • Strengthen bones and muscles

These are just some of the many benefits that Pokémon trainers can get when walking around trying to catch a Pikachu.

Mental Health Benefits of Pokémon GO

Along with walking around town feeling the burn in those thighs, Pokémon Go has been known to have tremendous mental health benefits.

Wait… So you are saying looking around town for a Pokémon can help my mental health?

That is exactly what I’m saying.

With approximately 1 of 5 adults experiencing a mental health illness (depression, anxiety, etc.) per year, there is an increasing urgency to find new ways to help those affected.

Those who struggle with these things tend to stay indoors with little to no motivation to be outside or socialize. Pokémon Go is taking the indoor introvert and transforming them into a social butterfree.

This is possible because all the Pokémon are outside waiting for you to catch them, not gathering in groups knocking on your front door. So if you want more Pokémon, you better get outside searching for them.

Some of the other mental health benefits that come from being outside playing Pokémon Go are…

  • Your concentration increases
  • You’ll be happier
  • Feel apart of a community
  • More opportunities to meet people
  • Reduction of negative thoughts
  • Rise in Vitamin D levels

It’s amazing how many benefits come from simply getting outside and walking around trying to find some Pokémon.

Here at IdealShape, we know that all of you can go the extra mile. That simply walking around is not enough of a challenge for you. That’s why we have created the Charmander to Charizard Pokémon Go Workout for you!

These workouts are designed to help you get a workout in while on your quest to be the very best, like no one ever was.

It is broken up into three levels of difficulties, beginner (Charmander), intermediate (Charmeleon), and expert (Charizard).

This follows the pattern of Pokémon evolution that is found in the Pokémon Go game. As a Pokémon gets stronger he evolves into a new and more powerful Pokémon. Just like the Charmander evolving into a Charmeleon, you can transform yourself into a stronger version of yourself!

All of these workouts are better if you do them at a place with multiple Pokestops and gyms near by. These locations are usually found at parks or in the center of town.

The Pokémon GO Charmander Workout

This is the beginner’s workout for those looking to get their heart rate up a little more when playing Pokémon go.

  • Walk around town, local park, or neighborhood looking for Pokestops and gyms.
  • When a Pokémon comes up that you already have do 5 lunges.
  • If a Pokémon comes up that you do not have do 5 body weight squats.
  • When at a Pokestop, for every item that you receive do 3 jumping jacks.
  • When you arrive at the gym battle them with your best Pokémon.
  • If you win, give yourself a pat on the back!
  • If you lose, do 10 burps.

The Pokémon GO Charmeleon Workout

Feeling confident now? You have just evolved from a cute little Charmander to the teenage angst Charmeleon so it’s time to step it up a little.

For 35 minutes do the following:

  • Jog around town, local park, or neighborhood looking for Pokestops and gyms.
    • Once you jog to your first location (Pokestop or gym), walk to your next, then repeat.

    • If you lose, do 20 burpees.

BONUS: The Snorlax Workout

Just because we love you, we decided to throw in the exclusive Snorlax workout!

Snorlax is known as being a very fat, lazy, and immovable Pokémon. This workout is a direct reflection of his best qualities.

Do this workout for as long as you want:

  • Sit down on a bench in town, local park, or neighborhood looking (not too hard) for Pokestops and gyms.
    • Once at your first bench sit there and don’t get up.
  • When a Pokémon comes up that you already have take a drink of soda.
  • If a Pokémon comes up that you do not have stuff as many chips in your mouth as possible.
  • When at a Pokestop, for every item that you receive eat one square of chocolate.
  • When you arrive at the gym battle them with your best Pokémon.
    • If you win, give yourself a pat on the back then call and order a celebratory pizza.
    • If you lose, call and order a pizza for mourning purposes.

This is personally one of my favorite workouts, but here at IdealShape we advise you to NEVER be a Snorlax or do this workout.
