Getting yourself to join a gym can be hard and a number of things may be holding you back. A few of these things holding you back may include the cost, the time it takes or just because you don’t know how things at the gym work. None of these things should hold you back from achieving your goals, especially the last one. So here we are going to provide you with a list of 5 things you need to know before joining a gym so that you know some proper gym etiquette.
1. If You Don’t Know, Ask Somebody
If you are new to a gym don’t be afraid to ask questions. With the wide array of exercises and equipment that can be done and used the gym there is no reason you should feel ashamed of being confused. Most people at the gym are happy to show you how to use a piece of equipment and most gyms have trainers whose job is to do so.
If you can’t figure it out just ask someone. You’ll reach your goals faster, you will avoid injury and you will avoid looking dumb!
2. Clean Up After Yourself
This one is a big pet peeve of mine. I hate going to the gym and having to re-rack someone’s weight or clean off someone’s sweat before using the equipment. Cleaning up after yourself is just common courtesy and allows everyone at the gym to have a better experience.
Most gyms have disinfecting wipes that you can use to wipe down the equipment after you are done using it. Cleaning your equipment and racking your weights only takes a minute of your time. So do it!
3. Go to the Gym to Workout, Not Socialize
We all have busy schedules and many people have little time to go to the gym. With this limited amount of time it can be frustrating when you are trying to use gym equipment and there is someone sitting on it while socializing with others or talking on their phone. I think this one should be a given, be respectful, don’t socialize on the equipment.
4. Don’t Judge and Don’t Feel Judged
Many people are afraid to go to the gym because they think others will judge them. For the most part this is completely untrue. As long as you are there to work hard and improve yourself, everyone else will accept you.
This also ties in to the first point I made earlier. Many people are afraid to use the equipment because they have never tried it before and don’t want to be judged negatively for using it wrong. If this is one of your fears, just ask someone.
This also goes the other way. If someone is new to the gym, don’t judge them. If they ask for help, try to help them in a way that will boost them up, not cut them down. Keep in mind that most people are there to improve themselves and that negativity will only push us in the opposite direction.
5. Work Hard
Now that you know a little more about general gym etiquette, go work hard. Joining a gym can be a great way to help you reach your overall health and fitness goals. One of the best things you can remember is to respect others around you and strive to reach those goals.
One thing to keep in mind as you participate in the IdealShape Up Challenge is what happens after. Joining a gym is a great way to continue on with your health and fitness goals and can help you stay focused.
