Strong opinions on both sides can leave us confused and unsure.

In my 10 plus years as a personal trainer and nutrition expert, I’ve found that a multivitamin plays an important role when it comes to health and weight loss.

Losing weight puts extra stress on the body, and taking a multivitamin can reduce the harmful effects of this stress. Plus, any weight loss generally means we are eating less calories. This can put us at further risk for nutrient deficiencies.

You might hear the argument that no one really needs a multivitamin because you can get all the nutrients your body needs from whole food.

While you can and should get as many nutrients from whole foods as possible, it rarely happens.

Less essential vitamins and minerals in our food can pose a problem to our health. Along with the problems I mentioned before (too much fast food, no access to whole foods etc.), our health could be in serious trouble!

Although a multivitamin is beneficial to pretty much anyone who wants to make sure they are getting the right nutrients, experts suggest that some people are in more need of a vitamin than others.

You are over 60

As we age, we don’t absorb the same amount of nutrients from our food like we used to. A quality multivitamin can help ensure you are getting what you need to age beautifully and like a boss.

You are on a weight loss program or reducing calories for weight loss

Weight loss can put a decent amount of stress on the body, so it’s a good idea to make sure you’re getting essential vitamins and minerals to ease this stress. There isn’t an exact time that’s best to take a multivitamin, but you should take it with food.

It’s best to work it into your routine and take it when you’ll remember most. Some like to take it with their first meal, others would rather take it at dinner.

Iodine: This mineral is required to ensure proper development and metabolism in humans. Getting enough iodine is especially important for thyroid health.

Iron: Iron helps metabolize proteins and plays a role in the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells. Iron helps to prevent fatigue too.

Magnesium: This mineral helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. Magnesium also helps regulate blood sugar levels and promotes normal blood pressure.
