Sweet Tooth? Cavities are the Least of Your Worries

Ice Cream Cone-Not So Sweet Tooth

I don’t have a sweet tooth, it’s more like all of my teeth are sugar cubes. Ever since I was a kid, sweets and desserts have been my biggest temptation. Today, my dentist can vouch for my sweet tooth with my tri-annual teeth cleanings.

We all know the damage sugar causes to our teeth. But, findings about the impact of sugar on the rest of our bodies is startling. In 2012 on CBS’s 60 Minutes, Dr. Sanjay Gupta said the following:

New research coming out of some of America’s most respected institutions is starting to find that sugar, the way many people are eating it today, is a toxin and could be a driving force behind some of this country’s leading killers, including heart disease.”

Is Sugar Really a Toxin?

Our bodies require small amounts of sugar to function properly. But that’s not refined sugar. Refined sugar has absolutely zero nutritional value. No vitamins, minerals, enzymes, fats or fibers.

Making matters worse, Americans consume 130 pounds of high fructose corn syrup every year. What does this sugar guzzling cause? Well, a five year study from the University of California found “strong evidence linking excess high fructose corn syrup consumption to an increase in risk factors for heart disease and stroke.”

So, sugar (or high fructose corn syrup) itself isn’t really a toxin. But, the rate at which we’re consuming it is causing toxic adverse effects.

>>Let’s not forget about sugar in soda. As if we didn’t have enough sugary choices to eat… now we can drink our fill of sugar as well. There is always an alternative that can be healthy and tasty.

The Impact of Sugar on Your Body

Sugar is the culprit of health issues from head to toe.

My Favorite Sugar Substitutes

I know that I will never completely get rid of sugar, and honestly I don’t want to! But knowing all the health (and weight) issues that come from sugar definitely has me looking at it in a new light. So, if I can help it I look for alternatives.

Have you ever been to a restaurant and grabbed Splenda instead of sugar?  Could you tell a difference? It’s definitely hard for me to.

What about a healthier and sweeter option than sugar (yes, this does exist)? Try products that have Stevia. I recommend starting with Truvia.

I’m always on a quest to find healthier alternatives and I would love to hear your choices. Leave a comment below!
