10 Unexpected Things That Happen When You Lose 10 Pounds

There’s nothing you can do to stop it…

These 10 unexpected things WILL happen to you when you lose just 10 lbs. They are backed by countless hours of scientific research, case studies, and my 10+ years of being a certified nutritionist, personal trainer, and head weight loss expert here at IdealShape.

Honestly, even with all my years of experiences and knowledge, there were still some things I discovered that left me speechless!

Make sure you check out reason #10! 🙂

#1 – Support a Strong, Healthy Heart

While carrying extra weight affects your entire body and mind, being overweight is particularly hard on your cardiovascular system.

Your heart is by far the hardest working muscle in the body and extra weight makes it work even harder. Since you need your heart to last, well, a lifetime you want to keep it strong and healthy.

Losing a few pounds show’s your heart some serious love. Losing just 10 pounds can support regular blood pressure, support healthy cholesterol levels within normal ranges, and make life easier on your joints since they support less overall weight.

#2 – Support Normal Cholesterol Levels within Healthy Ranges

If you ask around among your friends, and even within your own family, you will likely find several people who are taking statin, a class of lipid lowering medications.

In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that approximately twenty-eight percent of all American adults now take one of these drugs!

Unfortunately, many people who take these prescription statin drugs develop pain in their joints and muscles after several weeks of being on them.

If your cholesterol is high, by losing 10 pounds you can put yourself on a path to healthier cholesterol levels and a healthier life. Truly, it is as simple as that!

#3 – Support Healthy Blood Pressure

According to the Institute For Quality and Efficiency In Health Care (IQWiG), losing about 9 pounds on average dropped systolic blood pressure four and a half points on average and diastolic pressure by three points on average.

This was based on data collected in eight major clinical studies involving 2100 people. Thus, just going for a walk in the park three to four times a week can lower your blood pressure naturally.

Losing 10 pounds dramatically cuts the collection of fat in and around your liver. The accumulation of too much fat around the liver may cause fatty liver disease, a condition that puts you at a higher risk for blood sugar issues.

#4 – Your Joints Will Thank You

How would you like to take 40 pounds of pressure off your knees when you walk? It’s a no brainer, but this can reduce your risk of aches and soreness if you already have it, according to experts at John Hopkins University.

Every pound of body weight translates to about 4 pounds of force on your ankles, knees and hips when you’re walking, so 10 extra pounds on your frame means 40 more pounds of pressure on your joints. Crazy right?

Losing just 10 pounds can help your joints suffer less wear and tear. You’ll be able to move well and for longer with less pain!

#5 – Increase Your Lifespan

There’s a reason life insurance companies often want to know your weight. Lifespan is inversely correlated with how much you weigh. Healthy weight ranges are associated with longer life spans.

Dr. Gary Whitlock and a team of scientist at Oxford University analyzed the data from fifty-seven long-term studies and found that weighing a third more than your optimal weight can shorten your lifespan an average of three years!

Other evidence and studies found that severe obesity can shorten your lifespan by an average of ten years. Yikes. Weight does matter!

#6 – Improve Your Sex Life

This one is pretty straight forward. Losing weight gives you a more positive body image which can make you feel better about sex too. Who doesn’t want that? 😉

In one study, people who lost an average of only 13 percent of their weight said they felt more attractive and weren’t as uncomfortable about letting their partners see them undressed as they were before they’d dropped the pounds.

#7 – Helps You Detoxify Your Body

Excess fat can contribute to toxic insides. Not what you want!

As belly fat builds up around your liver and kidneys, these important organs will have an increasingly harder time detoxifying your body.

And yep, you guessed it, losing weight can help this problem!

In fact, this is one of the primary reasons why people start to feel so much better when they lose just a little weight.

#8 –  Help you get a good night’s sleep

Having a rough time catching some Zs? Does your partner have to nudge you because you snore every night?

If you do snore at night, you may have a form of sleep apnea. This is when your wind passages get partially blocked while you sleep.

This can be a dangerous condition since you may not be getting enough oxygen!

Losing just 10 pounds can widen your windpipe, helping you sleep through the night and reduce your risk of developing sleep apnea. And when you sleep well, your levels of leptin (the hormone that signals when you’ve had enough to eat) rise. So, a good night’s sleep will help you in more ways than one!

#9 Dodge Diabetes

Losing 10 pounds can drop your numbers by half a point on average, which is close to the effect from some diabetes medications.

In fact, according to Johns Hopkins researchers, losing just 5-10 percent of your body weight can slash your risk of developing diabetes by 58 percent.

#10 – Live a Happier Life

Losing just 10 pounds will make you happier in multiple ways. You’ll feel better and have more confidence.

If you want a more scientific reason, a surplus of body fat interferes with hormone regulation which may cause or exacerbate depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

Losing weight isn’t about not loving yourself, it’s the opposite! It means you care about your health enough to make a change.
