Jana Kislingbury is the October Ship Shape Challenge winner! This year, she lost 68 pounds and even got her family and coworkers on board, too…
At the start of this year, her milestone 40th birthday year, Jana felt she had hit rock bottom. She had gained a total of 60 pounds during her two pregnancies and it stuck. Her children were 4 and 1.5 years old.
“After my son was born, I was new at figuring out the ‘mom’ thing, so I felt I never had time to exercise,” Jana says. “And it seemed more convenient to eat junk food that was readily available.” Already 20 pounds overweight, she gained another 40 before giving birth to her daughter. “I didn’t feel the need to eat healthy during my pregnancy. Wow, that was a mistake! So here I am, needing to lose 60 pounds!”
But Jana’s weight challenges didn’t start with pregnancy; weight loss had been a struggle she’s faced her whole life. “My mom used to always struggle with her weight, and inflicted in me that ‘you’ve got to look perfect,’ even though she didn’t,” Jana says. “I started Weight Watchers when I was 13 years old.”
These diets didn’t help her learn to deal with the ups and downs, though, and she still used food as a crutch when she was emotional. Throughout adulthood, her weight continued to fluctuate — she would lose weight for a special occasion, then go back to old eating habits.
Changing her lifestyle proved difficult. Dividing her time among her job, her husband and her young children, it seemed there wasn’t time left to take care of her own needs.
Jana’s real wakeup call came, just like Christine’s, when she realized she was too out of shape to play with her kids.
That’s when I finally decided, enough is enough!”
“This was not what I want to be for my young children — a lethargic couch potato,” she thought. “I want to be physically fit to keep up with them and to be healthier overall. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I was ready to start a new chapter in my life… a thin and healthy one!”
Jana looked online for an exercise and nutrition plan she would stick with, and that’s when she found IdealShape. “Every review website I read, there was always one product as their number one choice for a meal replacement shake,” she says.
In January 2014, Jana embarked on her new way of life: she started having an IdealShake for breakfast and a shake or a IdealBar for lunch, then eating a balanced whole-food dinner. She also started exercising 30 minutes a day, six days a week. The results came quickly: she was averaging 10 pounds a month of weight loss.

Continuing her daily regimen, Jana reached her goal in six months: by July she had lost 60 pounds and gone from a size 18 pants to a size 10 pants!
At first Jana felt guilty when she started taking time to exercise after work this year. But soon her kids were on board, offering to play while she exercised and even getting upset when she didn’t stick to her routine. Her husband also comes home from work as soon as he can to pitch in, and she makes healthy dinners that don’t take much time to prepare.
Jana’s husband says that in the 12 years they’ve been together, she’s happier than she’s ever been. “Now I enjoy life, I love being a wife and a mom, and it started when I decided to focus on myself,” she says. “I have more energy now, more confidence in myself and I feel good about myself in clothes!”
I’m finally wearing the bikini I’ve had for 15 years!”
“A more active family is what we’ve become now,” she says. “We have a pool now and enjoy it!”
Jana also has support at work. Her coworkers held a 90-day weight loss challenge in the spring and 20 people participated, putting $20 each into the pot. She learned to manage workplace temptations by having an IdealBar for lunch when she goes out with coworkers and by walking the skywalks in the city during her breaks. No surprise, the final weight loss winner at work was Jana!
Maintaining her weight loss since July (and losing 8 more pounds!) hasn’t been without small struggles, but her willpower is strong now. “When people say ‘wow you look great’ that’s all I need to keep going,” she says. “I’m excited to go into the holidays, knowing I don’t need those treats to make myself happy. I can go out for a walk with my kids and be happy.”
When her 40th birthday came in August, Jana’s husband planned a vacation to celebrate and “get away with his hot new wife”! 🙂
