If you’ve been around IdealShape for a while now, you know that I absolutely love yoga.
I started my fitness career in personal training and nutrition, but I always loved the cool yoga poses I would see on Instagram. I wanted to be able to do all of the yoga poses I saw on Instagram.
For me, practicing yoga started with wanting to be able to do all of the cool poses, but it changed into something more.
I found myself while practicing yoga. I was able to connect with my thoughts on a deeper level and truly understand myself and my body. Through yoga, I learned deeper self love.
A lot of my clients are afraid to start yoga–they tell me they aren’t flexible enough, or it seems too intimidating.
I’m here to tell you that yoga is for everyone! People at all levels can do yoga, because you can customize your yoga experience to your own body and your own abilities.
To me, yoga is all about connecting with ourselves and being very aware of where we are at. You don’t have to do the hardest yoga poses to connect with yourself, you can hold poses that your body can handle and still participate!
I want to share with you 3 ways that yoga can improve your self love. I hope you’ll try yoga with me sometime!
Yoga for Self Love #1: Yoga Helps You Slow Down
Life is busy, we all know that. Sometimes it can feel like you’re moving from one thing to another so fast that you don’t have time to breathe.
A big part of yoga is breathing. Movements are slow and nothing is rushed. Breathing through the movements helps connect you to the present and to yourself.
Slowing down allows for reflection and deeper thought. Reflecting on the day, your family, your thoughts, or yourself is important while moving through yoga poses.
Slowing down and listening to our bodies and our thoughts is important for self love. You can appreciate yourself more when you can take a moment to reflect and look inward.
Yoga for Self Love #2: Learn How Amazing Your Body Actually Is
Loving my body didn’t always come easily–in fact, there were times when I would look in the mirror and truly hate what I saw looking back at me.
I know a lot of people feel the same way I did. I want to tell you how much fitness, and especially yoga, have given me a real sense of love for my body.
Yoga pushes your body to places you didn’t know were possible. Even simple poses can be new for your body! As you work through poses and movements, you can see what your body can actually do.
Yoga is a place of healing. You will learn to appreciate your body through regular yoga practice, I am sure of it! Some days might be harder than others, but ultimately it is worth it.
Yoga for Self Love #3: Practice Positive Self-Talk
Yoga is a great place to practice positive self-talk. It can be easy to get down on yourself if you can’t keep up, or if a particular pose is too hard for your body.
Positive self-talk doesn’t come easy–the best things in life require a lot of hard work and practice. If you notice yourself using negative self-talk while practicing yoga poses, learn to stop those negative thoughts.
Replace negative self-talk during yoga with a positive mantra. You could say something like, “I am strong and my body is learning something new,” or, “I can face any challenge with a smile.” Come up with your own positive statement and start replacing negative thoughts!
If you’re afraid to start practicing yoga, start small! You can only go up from here. Yoga for self love is a great way to learn more about yourself and test your body’s strength.
Don’t be intimidated by scary yoga poses–everyone had to start at the beginning. If you want to start practicing yoga at home, check out my short yoga flows on IdealShape’s YouTube account! Tell me how your yoga practice goes, because I’m here to support you every step of the way.
