As a personal trainer, I often get asked what the best type of exercise is to lose weight.
My answer usually surprises people.
I tell my clients that the best exercise to lose weight is the one they enjoy and will stick with long term.
For Sally, the best might be weight lifting because she loves feeling strong. For Jake, the best is swimming because it’s low impact.
One of my favorite exercises to keep my weight in check is yoga. Now if you’re thinking that yoga isn’t “challenging” enough to yield results think again. Yoga can be a very effective tool for weight loss in more ways than one!
Yoga For Weight Loss
Yoga Helps You Manage Stress
Too much stress and weight gain often go hand in hand. This is because when we stress, our body releases cortisol, the stress hormone. Too much cortisol can cause our bodies to hold onto fat (especially in the tummy area) and to have a harder time losing weight.
Stress also gets in the way of making good decisions. How many times have you let your emotions dictate your cravings and what you eat or if you workout or not?
From my experience as a personal trainer and in the health and wellness industry, yoga is one of the best ways to manage stress and anxiety. The deep breathing and focus required allow your whole body and mind to relax.
One of my first experiences with yoga occurred during a very difficult time in my life. You know how life sometimes hits you all at once with problems and hardship? Well, this was one of those rough times.
One day I randomly went to a yoga class because I had started working out again and was feeling really tight. I had no clue the impact this class would have on me.
When I got to savasana (the last part of a yoga session, final relaxation) I started crying a river of tears and realized how much stress I was carrying and how hard I was trying to just mask my emotions and be the strong one.
I went back to class over and over because the inner focus and deep breaths were helping with the panic attacks and anxiety I had been having.
This is why I became a yoga teacher! I wanted people in my community to know some of the benefits I had found from practicing.
Yoga builds strength, and I’m not just talking physical!
Yoga is great for building endurance, flexibility, and balance. It can help you lean out and tone the muscles.
Yoga also teaches you to use and strengthen muscles you didn’t even know you had! I’m talking stabilization muscles that are so important for posture and mobility, but they often get overlooked.
I love yoga because it helps me with my weight training and vice versa. It helps me reduce soreness while still toning and strengthening my body.
Yoga also builds mental strength. Every time I mastered a new pose or made it through a tough class, I learned I could do hard things. You just have to try it!
Yoga Burns Calories
Since yoga requires strength, balance, flexibility, moving, and holding your bodyweight, it serves as a great calorie burner! It’s the perfect combination of balance, strength, endurance, and cardio.
Some yoga flows can burn up to 600 calories, just as much as a typical gym session!
Yoga is also suitable for every level of fitness. If you are a beginner and need a way to get active, try yoga! There are plenty of gentle yoga flows to help you get started and moving.
If you’ve been working out for quite a while but need something to get you over that plateau, try yoga! Try challenging yourself and try new things. You might just find your favorite new workout!
